Chiron

A small body between Saturn and Uranus. In your chart, it marks your oldest hurt, and the wisdom you grow from it.

Fig. 31 · Chiron

Chiron is a small body that circles the Sun between Saturn and Uranus. It was first spotted in 1977, which makes it a newcomer to a tradition thousands of years old. It takes about 50 years to go once round the zodiac, and its path is so stretched that it spends under two years in some signs and around eight in others.

Astrologers took its meaning from the myth. In Greek myth, Chiron was the wise centaur who taught heroes medicine, music and archery. He was wounded by an arrow and could never be cured, and he became the greatest teacher of healing anyway. That is the idea astrology kept: the wounded healer.

In your chart, Chiron marks your oldest hurt. It's a tender spot you've carried since early on, where you still feel things more sharply than you let on. It isn't a flaw. It's often the place you understand other people best, because you know exactly how it feels.

The sign shows the shape of the hurt. Chiron in Gemini can be about feeling unheard, or not quite clever enough. In Leo, it can be about being seen and celebrated. In Capricorn, it can be about never feeling you've done enough. Chiron moves slowly, so people born around the same years often share its sign. The sign says as much about your generation as about you. The house makes it personal. It shows where in life the hurt turns up: the 2nd house for money and self-worth, the 7th for close relationships, the 10th for work and reputation. Horozy uses whole-sign houses, so your Chiron's house is counted from your rising sign. You need your birth time for this part.

Aspects add the detail. A planet close to Chiron is wired into the hurt. Chiron is small, so we only count tight aspects: within 3° for a conjunction, and within 2° for the others. Mercury beside Chiron, for example, can mean the hurt lives in how you think and talk.

Chiron isn't fate. By tradition, it shows where the work is, and where you grow wise. Many astrologers say its patterns soften with age, especially around your Chiron return at about 50, when Chiron comes back to where it was when you were born. In your Horozy natal report, Chiron gets its own section, "Your Oldest Hurt", read one layer at a time: the placement, the sign, the house, your rising sign, then any planets tied in. Next comes a section on working with your chart, with small practices that use your own other placements as resources. If it touches something heavy, talking it through with someone you trust or a counsellor can help.
